Kandalama

Ancient Reservoir Landscapes Along Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle

Kandalama is shaped by the Kandalama Reservoir, an ancient irrigation tank believed to date back to the Anuradhapura period, and its surrounding mix of rocky outcrops, woodland cover, cultivated land, and archaeological forest. Located between Dambulla and Sigiriya, the area forms part of a wider landscape where water, heritage, and wildlife continue to overlap.

Unlike locations visited for a single attraction, Kandalama is better understood as a landscape setting. The reservoir influences the area’s birdlife, seasonal movement, and visual character, while nearby access to Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kaludiya Pokuna adds historical depth to the experience.

  • The reservoir remains one of the area’s defining environmental and visual features.

  • The setting combines ancient water systems, woodland, and open dry-zone terrain.

  • Visits here are often shaped by slow exploration, scenery, and proximity to cultural sites
