Ella
A hill country landscape shaped by elevation, forest, and water
Ella is located in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, at an elevation of approximately 1,041 metres (3,415 ft) above sea level. The area is defined by steep ridges, narrow valleys, tea plantations, forest patches, and seasonal streams. Average daytime temperatures generally range between 17–25°C, making it cooler than the island’s lowland and coastal regions.
Rather than large protected parks, Ella’s environment consists of interconnected natural and cultivated spaces, where forest edges meet tea estates and village land. This creates a setting where birdlife and small mammals are commonly observed, particularly during early morning and late afternoon hours.

Experience in Ella
Ella receives higher rainfall than the surrounding dry zones, particularly during the south-west monsoon (May–September). Rainfall contributes to dense vegetation, frequent mist, and active water flow through streams and waterfalls. These conditions influence both visibility and movement patterns, with changing landscapes across seasons.
The terrain limits large animal movement, but supports a wide variety of resident and migratory bird species, reptiles, and small mammals adapted to forest and plantation environments.
